Department

A department built around rigor, practice, and responsibility.

This page explains where the department came from, what it's trying to do, and how it's organized to do it — from academic governance down to the labs students actually work in.

Mission

To educate capable, adaptable computing professionals and to advance research that is technically rigorous and answerable to the people it affects.

Vision

To be a department where advanced computing education and responsible research development strengthen each other, not compete for attention.

History

Nearly four decades of the same department, rebuilt several times over

1987
Department Founded

The Department of Computer Science is established within Northridge University's Faculty of Science, with an inaugural cohort of 34 students.

1994
First Graduate Programs

The department introduces its first postgraduate offerings, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Computer Science.

2001
Shannon Hall Opens

A dedicated systems and networking building opens, consolidating the department's growing hardware and infrastructure teaching labs.

2009
Cybersecurity Concentration Introduced

In response to growing industry demand, the department introduces a dedicated cybersecurity concentration and its first isolated security lab.

2013
Software Engineering Track Launched

The B.Sc. Software Engineering track launches as a distinct pathway from B.Sc. Computer Science, emphasizing engineering process and quality.

2017
Intelligent Systems Lab Established

The department's flagship AI research group is founded, beginning what is now nearly a decade of continuous research into explainable machine learning.

2020
M.Sc. Data Systems Introduced

A new graduate program launches to meet demand for specialists in large-scale, responsibly governed data infrastructure.

2024
HCI Studio Renovated

The Human-Computer Interaction Studio is renovated with dedicated usability-testing rooms, supporting an expanding program of user research.

2026
67-Course Curriculum Milestone

The department's course catalog surpasses sixty offerings across four academic levels, alongside 18 active faculty research projects.

Core Values

What the department holds itself to

01
Intellectual Rigor

We hold ideas, including our own, to a high standard of evidence and reasoning.

02
Practical Excellence

We value work that holds up outside the classroom, not just inside it.

03
Responsible Innovation

We ask what a system should do, not only what it can do, before we build it.

04
Collaboration

The hardest problems in computing are rarely solved alone.

05
Curiosity

We treat a good question as valuable as a good answer.

06
Service

We measure our work partly by what it does for people outside the department.

Facilities

Where the work happens

Systems Laboratory
Shannon Hall, Ground Floor

A general-purpose lab for coursework in operating systems, computer architecture, and networking, equipped with reconfigurable hardware for low-level experimentation.

AI & Data Laboratory
Ada Turing Hall, 4th Floor

GPU-backed workstations supporting machine learning coursework and the Intelligent Systems Lab's active research projects.

Software Engineering Studio
Ada Turing Hall, 2nd Floor

An open, team-oriented space for CSC301 and capstone project teams, with breakout rooms for design reviews and sprint planning.

Cybersecurity Laboratory
Shannon Hall, 1st Floor

An isolated, air-gapped environment for hands-on security coursework and the Secure Systems Group's research, built specifically to allow safe offensive-security practice.

Human-Computer Interaction Studio
Hopper Building, 1st Floor

A usability-testing facility with dedicated observation rooms, recently renovated ahead of the current academic year.
