Biography

Samuel Berger has spent his career chasing latency out of large systems, one bottleneck at a time. He leads the department's systems concentration and its industry-sponsored performance-tuning practicum.

Computer Architecture

Computer Architecture builds on the digital logic foundation from CSC108 into a full picture of how a modern processor and memory system deliver performance, and where that performance breaks down. Students come away able to explain why two functionally identical programs can run at very different speeds.

Distributed Systems covers what changes when a program's components run on different machines that can fail or fall out of sync independently: consistency, replication, and consensus. The course treats failure as the normal case, not the exception.
